The Correct Way to Log and Transfer Sony HDR-CX900 AVCHD/MP4 files to Final Cut Pro

Want to import video files from Sony HDR-CX900 to FCP 6/7/X while Final Cut can't detect your camcorder. Fortunately, there is an easy way to fix the issue. Find it out here.

Are you planning to get one camcorder which can shoot videos in different formats AVCHD Progressive, MP4 and the even the new format XAVC S? If so, I believe Sony HDR-CX900 HD Handycam is your best choice. It can easily record simultaneously in AVCHD and MPEG-4, plus there is the newly developed XAVC S codec which can offer 50Mbps recording. You can choose to record AVCHD, which can be enjoyed on large screen HDTVs and is ideal for capturing precious memories in family vacations and other moments. However, if you have some MTS files and try to import them from Sony HDR-CX900 to Final Cut Pro, you are likely to get some incompatible errors.

Do you know the reason? In fact, AVCHD is a great format for playing but not a comfortable format for editing with Mac(Almost Mac tools are designed to support MOV format). And as far as I know 1080 60p AVCHD Progressive is a nonstandard format, FCP won’t support it natively. To bring MTS clips Sony CX900 Handycam into FCP for further editing without error again, we advice you to reformat AVCHD to a compatible format, such as FCP's Apple ProRes Codec, before importing and editing.

I have been using the professional Brorsoft MTS/M2TS Converter for Mac to encode my Sony HDR-CX900 AVCHD .mts footage to AIC .mov with the best befitting settings. With this software, you can aslo effortlessly transcode MTS to Apple ProRes 422, ProRes 422 HD, ProRes 422 LT, ProRes 4444 for FCP, MPEG-2 for Premiere Pro, DNxHD .mov for Avid MC, etc., and it works well and converts flawlessly. Below is the detailed guide for you.

Step 1. Launch the software and click Add File icon to load your 1080p MTS file(s) to it.

Step 2. Click the Format bar to get the drop-down menu and you can get the Apple ProRes codecs, including ProRes 422 (HQ), ProRes 422, ProRes 422 (LT), ProRes 422 (Proxy) and ProRes 4444. Choose the proper one you want.

Step 3. Press the "Settings" icon and you'd better set proper video frame rate, video size for editing Sony Handycam MTS files in FCP X/7/6 with the best quality.
